DESIGN | Creating an app that supports local sustainable living

Background

The idea for this project emerged from the observation that while neighborhood apps connect people locally, they rarely focus on sustainability or conscious living. At the same time, many individuals are willing to make more sustainable choices – but often lack practical tools, local information, or daily motivation.

Challenge

One of the biggest challenges in promoting sustainability is not only encouraging people to adopt more eco-friendly behaviors, but also helping them to maintain these habits over time. Existing neighborhood apps often lack a strong motivational system and fail to connect sustainable living with everyday convenience and rewards. The challenge was to design an experience that makes sustainable choices visible, accessible, and engaging — while motivating users to stay committed through a meaningful reward system and a sense of community.

Solution

Tanukin aims to close the gap of missing tools, information & motivation by combining local discovery with environmental awareness. Users can explore a curated map of for example nearby eco-friendly cafés, organic bakeries, and have an overview of sustainable events such as flea markets or clothing swaps. Through a reward system, the app encourages real-world action: users collect points by scanning QR codes at participating locations, motivating them to live more consciously while becoming more connected to their surroundings.
